LIAT takes to skies again, inaugural flight lands in Saint Lucia

The Saint Lucia Tourism Authority welcomed the inaugural flight of LIAT 20 from Antigua as it touched down at George F.L. Charles Airport on Thursday.

The landing of the flight marked a significant milestone in Caribbean aviation as the airline again made it to the skies after being shut down in January 2024 due to financial issues.

The arrival of LIAT 2020 was celebrated with a ceremonial water cannon salute, which symbolized a new chapter in regional connectivity.

As the flight arrived, the officials said that the launch of LIAT20’s new route not only boosts the bond between the islands but also enhances the ease with which people can travel across the Caribbean region.

This new service, with onward connections to Barbados will open up several wonderful opportunities for regional travel which will make it easier for individuals to visit Saint Lucia for honeymooners, vacations and various other events.

The Head of Marketing at the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, Dexter Percil, also remarked that the Caribbean has long required more strong connections between the islands. He added that LIAT20’s expansion plans are a promising step in that direction.

Percil further noted that his team is elated about the potential for further growth and is looking forward to partnering with LIAT20 as they continue to connect more destinations across the region.

He further invited everyone to come and experience the beautiful destination following Julien Alfred’s Olympic feat.

According to the information, LIAT20 will be operating twice daily, three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from this month onwards. The airline will serve the Antigua – Saint Lucia – Barbados route.

This new service will be operated using the Embraer 145 aircraft with a capacity of 50 individuals which marks a significant boost in travel opportunities within the Caribbean region.

Also, from September onwards, the destinations and frequency are anticipated to expand, including additional routes to St Kitts, Sint Maarten, Grenada, and Dominica.

As the Saint Lucia is all set to host key events including the Caribbean Premier League, Saint Lucia Adventure Week and Creole Heritage Month, this new service comes at the right time which will allow travellers to easily travel to the island nation and immerse themselves in its vibrant culture.

It is to be noted that over the last 50 years, LIAT has been a crucial lifeline for the Caribbean which has been fostering regional connectivity and support the economic and social fabric of the islands. With the launch of LIAT 20 which replaced LIAT 1947, the aviation industry of the region is stronger than ever.
