On the final day of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2024, the Barbados Royals team defeated Trinbago Knight Riders to lift the title trophy. The Champion team of the third edition of the franchise-based league defended their title as winners of the 2023 season.
The two crucial performances of Aaliyah Alleyne and Chamari Athapaththu became the reason for the Barbados Royals to seal the match in their favor. Aaliyah Alleyne marginalized the Trinbago Knight Riders with her bowling, and Chamari Athapaththu stayed on the pitch till victory.
The final match of WCPL 2024 was a game of low-scoring totals on the board. The toss was won by the victor captain, Hayley Matthews, who invited the champions of the first edition of WCPL to bat and set a chasing target.
Trinbago Knight Riders’ openers, Captain Deandra Dottin and Jannillea Glasgow came to open the inning for the team. After the end of the dedicated 20 overs, Knight Riders managed to collect just 93 runs on the scoreboard while losing 8 wickets.
The fall of wickets started with the dismissal of Captain Deandra Dottin on the ball of Captain Hayley Matthews. She departed on the fourth ball of the second over with a personal score of 6 runs with the help of 1 six after facing 8 balls.
Just Jannillea Glasgow and Shikha Panday were the two players who managed to cross the mark of 20 runs while batting. Jannillea Glasgow scored 24 runs in 32 balls with 3 fours as the opener, while Shikha Panday collected 28 runs in 32 balls with 2 fours at second dawn.
Kycia Knight, at fifth dawn, scored 17 runs on 16 balls with 1 six and stayed not out. Aaliyah Alleyne, with the bowl, took the most wickets for Barbados Royals in the WCPL 2024 final. She dismissed 4 wickets in her spell of 4 overs and gave 21 runs with an economy rate of 5.25.
After Aaliyah Alleyne, Captain Hayley Matthews came out to be the most successful bowler for the team, who took 2 wickets in her 4 overs. Matthews also remained the most economical bowler of the match as she gave just 13 runs in her spell at the rate of 3.25.
In total, seven bowlers were brought to the attack by Captain Hayley, including herself, among whom three added wickets with their names. At the end of the first inning, the match seemed very much in favor of Barbados Royals, which also concluded in the same way.
The second inning was opened by Captain Hayley Matthews and Chamari Athapaththu to achieve the target of 94 runs in 120 balls. The two-digit target in the T20 match was chased by the Barbados Royals at the end of the fifteenth over with a loss of 6 wickets.
The chase was initiated in a stable manner by two openers who collected 48 runs till the end of the power-play. The first dismissal came in the face of Captain Hayley, who departed at the very first ball of the seventh over by Samara Ramnath.
Hayley Matthews left the ground after getting caught by Captain Deandra at a personal score of 13 runs with the help of 1 boundary in 12 balls. After the departure of the Captain, Barbados Royals kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
However, due to the low total on the scoreboard, Trinbago Knight Riders failed to build pressure on the winning team at any point in the WCPL 2024 final. Along with that, Chamari Athapaththu protected her strike and kept scoring consistently, which diverted the challenge of falling wickets.
Chamari Athapaththu scored 39 runs with the help of 7 fours, including winning runs, in 47 balls and cleared the path of Barbados Royals to lift the trophy of Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2024.
The Winners of the Women’s Caribbean Premier League are:
WCPL 2022: Trinbago Knight Riders
WCPL 2023: Barbados Royals
WCPL 2024: Barbados Royals
The supporters and fans of the Barbados Royals team are happy after the victory of the Women’s Squard one more time in the franchise-based league. The team management, players, and fans started the celebration of the WCPL 2024 final victory.
Barbados Royals dominated the entire T20 tournament this year with some strong performances. They just lost one match, also against Trinbago Knight Riders, where they failed to defend a total of 130 runs. Some people commented on the only loss of a team in the league.
People said, “Congrats to Royal to take trophy home again… what a show… they just not played grt cricket but matserstretegy also. The loss to tkr in last match was surely a part of plan so that guyana can not come in final. As a lacking team tkr was easy to defeat and take cup one time more.”
