Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit shared a glimpse of ongoing construction work at the Goodwill Secondary School in Dominica. He shared a quick look at the construction site through his official Facebook page.
The Goodwill Secondary School is an initiative by the government to rebuild six schools including 1 secondary and 5 primaries across the country. This development is the part of government’s efforts to rebuild stronger and more resilient since the passage of Hurricane Maria.
A foundation for the school was led early in June this year, however, the school has now moved ahead with its construction as the pavement of the initial school structure has been completed.
The Goodwill secondary school upon completion will house several departments including Vocational Education, Technical Studies, Music, Arts, Food Preparation, Electrical Installations, and many other educational programs.
The government aims to provide every facility to the students at the new school including refrigeration, air conditioning, counseling care, library, science labs, auditorium, canteen, sports ground, and many more.
The authorities also led the foundation of another school earlier in Marc. This groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Thibaud Primary School on 6th March 2024.
Notably, these initiatives are a part of the collaboration between the Republic of China and Dominica. The China-aided project aims to deliver the most advanced educational institutions in Dominica and the Caribbean region.
The project was announced in response to the considerable infrastructural damage caused by Hurricane Maria. The disastrous hurricane in 2017 resulted in the demolition of schools, colleges, hospitals, and homes, leaving many homeless.
Following that, Dominican authorities set a goal of becoming the world’s first climate-resilient nation, which necessitated the construction of a resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding any natural disaster.
Apart from the schools, the government is also working on the project to build climate-resilient homes across the nation. with several keys delivered to these houses, many are still undergoing construction.
The government’s efforts are a critical step towards strengthening the nation and ensuring continued safety and security. As the country approaches its goal of being a climate-resilient nation, these efforts stand out as an effective disaster prevention technique.
