Grenada: The government of Grenada announces Tax Waivers among different sectors to provide relief to those devastated by Hurricane Beryl.
The authorities issued a waiver on the Value added Tax (VAT) on Local Purchases and a waiver of Common External Tarriff (CET), and Customs Service Charge (CSC) on imported items.
The waivers cover a wide range of essential items, including building materials, household furnishings, and equipment with replacement parts.
The beneficiaries of the project include those whose livelihoods were severely destroyed with the passage of Hurricane Beryl and require a thorough repair or reconstruction.
The aim is to reduce the burden on the public for reconstruction through reduced costs associated with necessary materials and equipment.
Building sector
For the building sector, the tax relief is subjected to several materials including, cement, steel, lumber, blocks, galvanize sheeting, screws, and many more items related to reconstruction. These materials are crucial in the development and rebuilding plans and their timely availability ensures resilience to further damage.
Additionally, the waiver also includes doors, windows, tiles, plumbing supplies, and electrical supplies. This waiver among several items ensures the restoration of buildings to its pre-hurricane conditions.
Household items
The waiver on household products includes cabinets, countertops, furniture, and large household appliances including gas stoves, refrigerators, televisions, washing machines, and many more. The concessions to these items are crucial as these products are available at high prices and will provide vital relief to the residents.
Equipment and replacement parts
The specialized equipment which got damaged due to hurricane Beryl, also got a significant waiver relieving businesses and individuals requiring them. These include generators, air conditioners, and replacement parts for cars.
This relief will be important to those who regularly require the use of these equipment as it ensures their continuity in working. The waiver on the other hand will be provided under certain limitations and conditions.
- Beneficiaries applying for the relief should have been directly impacted by Hurricane Beryl.
- Concessions on large household appliances will only be provided one item per household.
- The beneficiaries should also be required to comply with building codes and practices approved by the government.
“The items attained by the beneficiaries are strictly not meant for sale” the authorities issued.
In order to apply for this relief, the needy should submit their applications to Beryl Economic Support Secretariat (BESS) in order to access the relief.
