Grenada Marks 50 Years of Independence with Special Edition $50 Banknote

Grenada: The government of Grenada has issued circulation for its brand new $50 note as an honour to celebrate their 50th independence anniversary. The authorities issued the new note on 2nd August 2024 in a special event, while the circulation for the same has now initiated.
This new note issued is a testament to represent Grenada’s achievements over the years. This commemorative note will serve as a symbol to Grenada’s golden jubilee towards independence, in response to which the authorities noted that, “Celebrate our nation’s golden milestone with this special keepsake”.
The creative director for the 50th independent celebration, Orlando Romaine stated a briefing for the new note on the launch ceremony. He mentioned that the new note contains signature of Governor Timothy Antoine.
Romaine added that, “This banknote pays homage to our people, our vibrant culture, our history, and cherished icons. A true representation of our independence theme, one people, one journey, one future.”
The front side of the note includes an image of Eric Mathew Geary known as the father of Independence. The note also incudes an image of three-time Olympic champion Kirani James. The note then includes an illustration of Morris Bishop International Airport, which is regarded as the symbol of progress and connection of Grenada to global community.
The front side also includes an image of cocoa and nutmeg, which pays homage to Grenada’s agricultural heritage, a crucial element of the nation’s economy. However, the back side of the note features the picture of Morris Bishop, former prime minister of Grenada.
The back side of the note also features ballet dancers, drummers, reflecting the vibrancy of Grenadian culture and their African ancestry. A boat illustration can be seen on the top part of the note signifying rich tradition of the boat building culture of petite Martinique and Kaikou. The national flower, Bougainvillea has been also illustrated on the note.
“This banknote stands as a timeless tribute to Grenada’s journey towards sovereignty and prosperity. It is a testament to the strength and unity of the Grenadian people” Romaine noted.
Notably, the notes are weaved together with beautiful accents of red, green, and gold took up from the colours of the flag.
“It embodies pride and optimism, accompanying the momentous occasion of our independence. I would like to close by thanking all persons who contributed to the realization of this significant asset, from conceptualization to its design and production, shipping and logistics, and now to the point of distribution” Romaine noted while thanking the combined efforts of the team.
