PM Mitchell visits Carriacou, Petite Martinique to assess rebuilding efforts

Grenada: The Prime minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell held a meeting with the residents of Petite Martinique and Carriacou on Friday. The meeting focused to discuss and note the progress made in the area after damage caused from disastrous hurricane Beryl.

The Prime Minister Mitchell discussed the financial matters to be taken in order to implement post Beryl relief efforts. He went ahead to discuss the tourism in the both the islands, while also noting the needs of the residents and their concerns.

The meeting also focused a mutual discussion between the PM and the residents where the locals stood up to discuss the relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts currently going in the nation. the locals stated their opinions and recommendations to PM Mitchell.

The discussions in Carriacou also led to another meeting with the Guyana Police Force, which is currently deployed in the island nation for rebuilding efforts. PM Mitchell took updates from them regarding the construction so far made for large and damaged buildings.

Hurricane Beryl destroys Carriacou

Notably, hurricane Beryl was one of the earliest recorded Category 5 hurricanes that hit the Caribbean on 1st July. It caused great damage throughout the region; however, it caused the most damage to the islands of Petite Martinique, Carriacou, St Vincent, and the Grenadines, with Carriacou being devastated completely.

The hurricane completely destroyed the island nations, causing at least 80% damage. The devastation also caused three fatalities, and a lot were left homeless. Notably, the Prime minister, Dickon Mitchell, has been actively involved in the fast recovery of the island nation since Beryl passed.

PM Mitchell’s call for volunteering efforts

PM Mitchell earlier also issued a release for volunteer efforts, stating that “The Government has issued an urgent call to individuals, locally and internationally, who are willing to volunteer their time and skills to help in the relief efforts following the impact of Hurricane Beryl on Grenada.”

This urgent call was issued in light of the fast recovery and rebuilding of nation. Several ministers including PM Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia, PM Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica, and PM Terrance Drew of St Kitts and Nevis went to witness the damage caused in the island nation.

Notably, many other Prime ministers from the sister island also visited the island nations during the recent CARICOM meeting held in Grenada. The sister islands have also provided extensive support to Grenada for their recovery.

The Guyana Defence Force sent 50 soldiers to Grenada early in July, just after the hurricane caused damage to the country. The Guyanese government also delivered emergency supplies to the island nation for their recovery.
