Saint Lucia advances plans for statue celebrating Julien Alfred’s Olympic triumph

Castries, Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia is all set to make a statue of Olympic Gold Medalist, Julien Alfred for her contribution in the sports. The work on a statue commemorating her historic triumph at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games has entered the advanced planning and design phase.

Alfred etched her name into the history books when she blazed to victory in the women's 100 metres, clocking a stunning 10.72 seconds to secure Saint Lucia's first-ever Olympic gold medal. The remarkable achievement not only captivated the nation but also elevated the island to unprecedented heights on the global sporting stage.

Providing an update during Monday, September 21, 2026, pre-Cabinet press briefing, Minister for Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation, Kenson Casimir, said significant progress has been made behind the scenes as Government moves to ensure Alfred's legacy is permanently celebrated.

According to Casimir, architects, designers, and technical personnel from the ministries responsible for planning, infrastructure, tourism, and sports have been working collaboratively to develop a fitting tribute to the sprint sensation.

A location has already been identified and purchased in the vicinity of the Julien Alfred Highway, while several artistic concepts have been submitted and are currently under review as officials seek the most inspiring representation of Saint Lucia's first Olympic champion.

"I believe Julien Alfred absolutely deserves it. I am very happy and excited about some of the designs I have seen," Minister Casimir stated.

The proposed site is currently undergoing technical evaluations, with road safety, visibility, accessibility, and overall public experience among the factors being carefully assessed before a final decision is made.

The monument is expected to become a landmark attraction, serving as both a tribute to Alfred's extraordinary accomplishments and a symbol of national pride. Officials also envision it as a powerful source of inspiration for young Saint Lucians, reminding them that dedication, perseverance, and belief can lead to greatness on the world's biggest stage.

Government has already fulfilled several commitments made in recognition of Alfred's achievements, including support towards her Olympic preparations. The development of the statue represents another significant step in honouring the athlete whose record-breaking performance united a nation and inspired a generation.
