Antigua and Barbuda: In a significant development, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has confirmed that a Nigerian airline, Air Peace, is all set to begin scheduled flights to Antigua and Barbuda by early next year or later this year.
While announcing the arrival of these new services, PM Browne noted that his administration had difficulties getting a partner, so they are very grateful that this collaboration between Air Peace and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has come to fruition.
This significant partnership strives to facilitate the movement of tourists from Nigeria to Antigua and Barbuda while enhancing the nation’s tourism sector.
Browne also assured that measures are being put in place to prevent issues which could be encountered during previous attempts to bring African tourists to the region.
He continued to say that he has learned lessons from his past experiences and has executed better controls. Also, his government strives to move genuine, wealthy tourists from Nigeria to Antigua on a scheduled flight basis, which will be a major contribution to tourism.
The Prime Minister outlined, “I believe that from later this year, no later than the first quarter of next year, you will see scheduled flights of Peace moving people out of Nigeria into Antigua and Barbuda, and then LIAT 2020 will take them throughout the Caribbean region.”
Not only this but PM Browne also addressed the public’s concern of Africans coming to the Caribbean. He assured that measures are already in place to prevent issues which were faced during earlier attempts to bring African tourists to the region.
He outlined that, “We learned a few lessons from the first attempts and I believe that we have better controls in place and we have always prided ourselves as a very resilient administration and not withstanding all of that.”
The Prime Minister further added, “We had to endure during that unfortunate period in which we ended up with a significant amount of conflicts with migrants traveling to our country. I believe that we now have the systems in place to avert any such situation and that we will be able to move genuine wealthy tourists out of Nigeria to Antigua on a scheduled flight basis to add to our tourism product.”
Gaston Browne noted that this movement will be beneficial for the island nation as the government seeks to further expand and diversify the island’s tourism product.
