Dr Denzil Douglas attends 81st UN General Assembly as part of St Kitts and Nevis delegation

St. Kitts and Nevis: Dr Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs of St. Kitts and Nevis attended the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Week on Tuesday (September 22, 2026). He began his schedule of diplomatic events and met with several diplomatic leaders.

Dr. Douglas participated in the 26th Special Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations of CARICOM where a number of agenda items were considered by the Council. Among those, the Council reaffirmed full support for Caroline Rodriguez-Birkett, Guyana’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations who is a Candidate for the United Nations Secretary General.

In addition, Dr Douglas participated in the Meeting on the Franco-Mexican Initiative to Regulate the use of the veto in cases of mass atrocities. He commended France and Mexico for their ongoing work to build support for this initiative over the 11 years of its existence.

Today, additional countries joined the initiative, and others expressed their intentions of joining. He also committed St Kitts and Nevis to advocating on behalf of this key initiative.

The General Assembly on Tuesday 22nd September with Brazil and the United States of America scheduled to speak. It is expected that Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Acting Prime Minister and Head of St Kitts and Nevis Delegation will deliver the National Address for St Kitts and Nevis on Friday, 25 September.

The 81st United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week officially continued on Tuesday, September 22, with Brazil and the United States among the countries scheduled to address the General Assembly.

The high-level session is bringing together world leaders and senior government officials to discuss key international issues, including global peace and security, sustainable development, international cooperation and the role of multilateral institutions.

For St. Kitts and Nevis, the General Assembly provides an important platform to engage with international partners and advance the country's diplomatic priorities while contributing to discussions on issues of importance to the Caribbean and the wider international community.

Dr. Douglas is expected to continue his diplomatic engagements throughout the High-Level Week, with further bilateral and multilateral meetings scheduled as part of the Federation's participation in the General Assembly.

Meanwhile, Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, Acting Prime Minister and Head of the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation, is expected to deliver the Federation's National Address on Friday, September 25.

The address is expected to outline St. Kitts and Nevis' priorities and perspectives on key global and regional issues before the United Nations General Assembly.
