Nevis Geothermal Project moves closer to drilling phase after site readiness review

Nevis: Preparations for the next phase of the Nevis Geothermal Energy Project are underway as representatives from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), and the Nevis Electricity Company Limited (NEVLEC) met to review implementation plans and assess the project's readiness for the upcoming drilling phase.

The meeting focused on site readiness, logistics, and the mobilization equipment that is needed for the project’s upcoming drilling phase. This marks another major milestone in one of the Federation’s most significant renewable energy initiatives.

According to NEVLEC, the discussions were mainly centered on implementation planning, transportation and access logistics, and the preparedness of the island’s port to receive the specialized drilling rig and supporting equipment.

Representatives also visited the proposed drilling site and port facilities to analyse existing conditions. They also reviewed the work required before drilling operations begin.

Recently disbursement of funds under the Caribbean Development Bank financing agreement took place which allowed the project to transition further from the planning stage toward implementation.

NEVLEC said that the latest meeting emphasizes that there is a continued coordination among local, regional, and international partners working to ensure that the project proceeds efficiently.

The geothermal project is being implemented with support from the Green Climate Fund, the Caribbean Development Bank, the inter-American Development Bank, the Federal Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Nevis Island Administration. The NEVLEC serves as the executing agency.

This geothermal project aims to harness geothermal energy beneath Nevis to produce reliable and renewable electricity. This will reduce the Federation’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and improve the long-term energy security of the country while also supporting climate resilience. Once the project is operational, it will provide a stable source of clean baseload power for Nevis. The country is also making future plans of exporting surplus electricity to St. Kitts through a subsea transmission cable.

The development of Nevis’ geothermal resource has been years in the making. Exploratory drilling was conducted way earlier in 2008 and it confirmed that there is a presence of commercially viable geothermal resources. But, the progress of this project was delayed because of financial, contractual, and logistical challenges. In recent years, the project has been reconstructed under a public-led development model. This model is supported by international financing institutions, which helped in resuming the preparations of full-scale drilling.

NEVLEC described the latest coordination meeting as another important step toward bringing the project into its implementation phase. Now, the funding is disbursed, site assessments are underway, and logistical preparations are progressing. The partners are saying that the project is continuing to move steadily toward the commencement of drilling operations, bringing Nevis closer to its goal of developing a cleaner, more resilient, and sustainable energy future.
