Michigan daycare gun incident
Michigan: The parents of a three-year-old boy have been arrested and charged after their son reportedly brought a loaded gun to a daycare centre in his backpack.
The incident occurred at Children’s World Early Learning Center, where the firearm was reportedly passed among children before a teacher noticed it and intervened.
The parents have been charged with misdemeanour crimes as their three year old son took a loaded gun to his daycare in his backpack. The gun was passed onto other children also until a teacher saw the gun and intervened. No shot was fired and no injury took place. According to Canton police, the officers then responded and took away the gun.
Parents have been arrested. Michigan has very strict laws when it comes to possessing weapons. One parent has been charged for violating the law that deals with possession and storage of guns, while the other parent, who is a police officer in the Detroit area, has been arrested for creating risk of harm. Both parents were arrested and presented in court and were released on bond.
“It is very unsettling to think about what may have happened in this case”, Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy said. He further added that children have a magnetic attraction for guns.
They always want to shoot it.
“There is nothing we take more seriously than the safety, security and well-being of the children entrusted to our care”, Children’s World said in a statement. The incident has raised serious concerns about child safety and responsibility.
The daycare praised the immediate response the teachers took to ensure safety of the children and assured of further measures including introducing regular checking of backpacks etc. A pre-trial conference is set for October30. The case is being actively investigated by the Canton Police Department and will be forwarded to Wayne County Prosecutor once investigation gets completed.
As per the state laws, parents are expected to lock the weapons when children are around in their homes. Adults who fail to comply with this rule can face a 93-day misdemeanour. And if a child accidentally shoots, the parents can be imprisoned for up to 15 years.
