Jamaica: St Andrew police shooting leaves three dead after suspected robbery vehicle intercepted

Jamaica: Two men and a woman were killed during a confrontation with members of Jamaica's security force in St Andrew early Sunday morning, September 13.

The three individuals were inside a motorcar that police believed to be connected to a series of robberies in the Corporate Area. No information on their names or the incident has been made public yet.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, officers encountered the vehicle at around 2:00 am, while carrying out an operation. One of the occupants allegedly pointed a firearm at the police as they moved to examine the car.

The officers acted in self-defence and opened fire at the vehicle. After the shooting, the two men and the woman were discovered to have been wounded by gunfire. The victims were rushed to Kingston Public Hospital where they were declared dead.

Police launched an investigation at the scene. They said that officers on-site recovered two illegal firearms at the scene following the incident.

The details surrounding the deaths of the individuals are expected to be examined by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM). They have been probing several fatal shootings involving members of security forces in recent months.

The most recent statistics from INDECOM indicate that 199 persons had been shot and killed by security forces between January 1 and September 1, 2026. This number is 13 less than the 212 persons that had been killed in 2025 during the same period.

Moreover, the 2026 monthly figures reported by the authority showed 28 killings in January, 23 in February, 25 in March, 39 in April, 24 in May, 20 in June and 20 in July. There were 19 killings in August, which was the lowest in 2026. One fatal shooting had been recorded on September 1.

Multiple-fatality police shootings have also been among the cases that INDECOM has been investigating throughout the year. In June, INDECOM stated that teams investigated five different police cases in a span of 24 hours, resulting in 11 deaths.

Investigation into the recent Sunday shooting remains ongoing.
