Dominica to hand over 215 climate resilient homes across nine communities: PM Skerrit

Roseau, Dominica: The government of Dominica will hand over 215 homes and apartment units in nine communities across the country. Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit made the announcement and said that these 215 families will have the opportunity to move into safe, modern and resilient homes.

“We are moving community by community, family by family and house by house, because we believe that every Dominican deserves a safe and comfortable place to live, ”said the prime minister.

The handing over of the houses are part of the efforts of the government in providing homes to the people who lost them in hurricanes and natural calamities. It is also aimed at enhancing the government’s agenda of becoming the world's first climate resilient nation as these homes can withstand these calamities.

“I absolutely believe that the government of Dominica should continue with its housing revolution, because we should never rest until we are satisfied that the people of Dominica all have a comfortable place to live and to grow their families,” said the prime minister.

While handing over 11 homes in Canefield East, Prime Minister Dr Skerrit expressed delight and said that the government of Labour Party always stands for the real people with real help.

He said that not every mother can find the money to build a home on her own, not every elderly person has children who can provide a comfortable house for them and as the government, they will not leave these people behind.

PM Skerrit added that when they provide a family with a home, they are lifting that family up, when they help a child to go to school, they are lifting that child up, when they provide health care to someone who cannot afford it, they are lifting that person up.

He called it real help for real people because there is a difference between simply talking about helping people and actually delivering to them.

“These 11 families do not have to depend on promises. Today they are receiving keys and they are walking into their homes. Now, 215 people will receive home in coming times.”

Prime Minister Skerrit also said that if they multiply 215 by an average $450,000 and this will tell people how much the government is spending on this and the land is not included.

He said that the government is moving community by community, family by family and house by house, because we believe that every Dominican deserves a safe and comfortable place to live.
