Buju Banton and Kes Named Honorary Grand Marshals for New York Caribbean Carnival
Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton and Trinidadian soca star Kes will lead the 59th New York Caribbean Carnival Parade on September 7 under the theme “One Caribbean.”

New York: Buju Banton and Kees Dieffenthaller of Kes The Band have been named honorary grand marshals for the 59th Annual New York Caribbean Carnival Week and Parade. The event will take place on Labour Day that is September 7 in Brooklyn, New York. The theme of the event is “One Caribbean,” celebrating the shared culture and musical traditions of the Caribbean community.
This announcement was made by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA). The organisation said that the selection reflects the theme of this year’s carnival. It shows the role of Caribbean music in bringing communities together.
Kes who is the lead vocalist of Kes The Band is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s best-known soca performers. He has helped in taking soca outside the Caribbean while he stayed closely connected to the island’s carnival culture.
Buju Banton is one of Jamaica’s most recognised reggae and dancehall performers. He has been in the industry for many years and his music has helped in bringing Jamaican and the Caribbean culture to international audiences.
According to the WIADCA, the two artists represent two different but closely related Caribbean music styles.
The two honourees will also be recognised during WIADCA’s 59th Annual VIP Breakfast on September 7. This would be held at the Lincoln Terrace Park in Brooklyn. It will take place before the main parade bringing together members of New York’s Caribbean-American community.
After the parade that will be taking place along the Eastern Parkway, the celebration will begin. It will feature Caribbean music, costumes, dancing, and cultural traditions.
This is an annual event which has been organised by WIADCA for nearly six decades. It has become one of the major Caribbean cultural celebrations in New York.
The selection of the two major artists from the Caribbean has added a strong focus to this year’s celebration. Banton and Kes' involvement has also highlighted that the international reach of Caribbean music and culture is growing rapidly.
