Belize: Two persons have been charged with the murder of Wilson "Chato" Perez, a 35-year-old community sports organizer, who was found dead in Carmelita Village, Orange Walk District, earlier this month.
The accused are 23-year-old Alex Anthony Banner and 22-year-old Darnell Emil Rhaburn Sergio Belizean workers. The police officially charged the two men jointly for murder on Thursday, October 22, in connection with Perez's killing on October 12.
Perez was last seen leaving his house at about 10:30 pm on October 12. According to his relatives, he told them that he was going to the village football field. His family decided to search for him after Perez did not return home for a long time. His body was found the next day with numerous chop wounds.
The victim’s body had been severely hurt, along with partial burns. His scooter was also found hidden in nearby bushes, while his severed head was recovered a short distance from the body.
Investigators are working to determine the events surrounding his last movements, including a text message linked to his decision to leave home that night. Police have not yet confirmed a motive for the killing.
Locals have taken to social media to express their sympathies for the victim’s family. One user commented, “Justice!!... May the crime against Mr. Perez not go unpunished.. may the law do its job.. with justice.”
Another stated, “Killed such a good person for no reason. They should be punished. May his soul rest in peace and his family is able to move on.”
