Antigua and Barbuda: The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced its decision to appoint former cricketer, Richie Richardson as the new Minister of Sports replacing Daryll Matthew.

Richardson will also follow Senator Marie Clare Hurst, who is stepping down from his position and will be the Senator to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).

The former West Indies cricket player, who is renowned for his brilliant cricket career and leadership abilities aims to be a successful replacement for his predecessor.

Senator Marie Clare Hurst announced his resignation recently due to some personal concerns which led the federation to come to this decision.

Richie Richardson, a 62-year-old cricketer has showcased an unbelievable performance while not just being the part but captain of the West Indies cricket team.

Known for his aggressive batting and fast bowling, the former cricketer has also been awarded the Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1992.

Richardson has also worked as a manager in the West Indies starting January 2011 for a duration of 5 years. With more than 224 ODI and 86 Test matches played, he has scored total runs of 6,248 and 5,949 respectively.

Notably, Richardson was also appointed as a referee by the Elite Panel of Match Referees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on 21st September 2015.

Someone else stated, “Sir Richie is a cool and level-headed person and I do think he would make an excellent Minister of Sports. My hope is that he will work and function with some level of self-determination and autonomy so he can really get the work done.”
