Antigua and Barbuda: Anthony Smith aims to foster sustainable agricultural

Antigua and Barbuda: The newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Fisheries, and the Blue Economy, Anthony Smith said he is focusing on promoting sustainable agriculture practices during his tenure.

Smith stated the establishment of food security and modernized technology in the department is the most crucial. He also shed light on the involvement of youth in agriculture, while stating them as the ‘future of the nation’.

The Minister appointed in the cabinet last month stated his experience so far, a memorable one. He mentioned the warm welcome received from his colleagues as a ‘remarkable experience’.

“The level of technical expertise and professionalism all the staff among various depicts their commitment to building a successful nation. Each and every head in the department possesses a clear understanding of their roles and objectives, and has a clear vision for their future,” Smith noted.

The Minister of Agriculture highlighted the significant potential the marine resources hold for a stronger economic development of the island nation. He excitedly regarded the successful launch of an aquaponics farm at the National Vocational Center for Persons Living with Disabilities.

“The combination of aquaculture along with hydroponics fits exclusively with the country’s geographical location,” Anthony Smith stated.

The region’s low rainfall, ecology, and limited land space, make it a great agro-business opportunity that young people can look forward to embrace.

Smith has also attended two regional events, including the TT Agri-Expo in Trinidad from August 16 to 18, alongside Director of Agriculture Gregory Bailey.

The event, titled “Farm to Table: Revolutionising the Local Food Supply Chain,” offered excellent insights into agricultural innovation.

Smith also represented Antigua and Barbuda earlier in August at the Caribbean Ministerial United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification Preparatory Conference in the Bahamas, emphasizing the necessity of sustainable land use in the future.

The meeting addressed crucial concerns such as drought and land degradation in preparation for the upcoming COP16 in Saudi Arabia.

Notably, Anthony Smith was earlier the part of United Progressive Party and he resigned from his position there on 15th July 2024. The very next day he joined the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party and was sworn in as the new Minister of Agriculture.

Anthony didn’t shed light on his resignation however during his address at the Parliament, his ex-colleagues left until he stopped speaking. This dramatic incident sparked concerns for many, present in or out of the parliament.
