PM Gaston Browne meets India’s Jaishankar on sidelines of UNGA81

Antigua and Barbuda: Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda met with Dr S Jaishankar, Foreign Minister of India on the sidelines of 81st UNGA. The meeting featured the conversation about developing partnership, climate change and capacity building on September 24, 2026.

Dr Jaishankar shared the glimpses on Facebook and expressed delight in meeting with Prime Minister Browne. He said, “Delighted to start Day 4 UNGA81 with a meeting with PM Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda.”

He said that their development partnership, capacity building and climate change cooperation are going forward. He also reiterated India’s commitment for the success of CHOGM, citing, “India is strongly committed to the success of CHOGM.”

Notably, the United Nations General Assembly is currently taking place in New York where delegations from across the globe have participated. PM Browne is one of them who took part in the assembly and talked with several diplomatic leaders, enhancing bilateral relations with the countries.

Prime Minister Browne’s UNGA programme includes high-level bilateral engagements and discussions centred on climate vulnerability, investment, energy, connectivity, development financing and the international concerns of small states.

The meeting with India is particularly relevant in the context of the two countries’ wider engagement on development and capacity building. Cooperation in these areas provides a framework for supporting institutional development and strengthening capabilities, while climate change remains a significant area of shared concern for Antigua and Barbuda and other vulnerable island nations.

The engagement also follows an India-CARICOM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in New York on September 23, bringing together India and representatives from Caribbean Community member states. The meeting provided another platform for discussions on strengthening India’s engagement with the Caribbean region.

For Antigua and Barbuda, participation in UNGA81 provides an opportunity to advance its diplomatic priorities while engaging directly with international partners on issues affecting small and vulnerable economies. For India, continued engagement with Caribbean nations forms part of its broader diplomatic outreach and development cooperation with the Global South.
