Dominica became independent on November 3, 1978, making November 3, 2026, its 48th Independence anniversary.
Dominica: The Ministry of Tourism joined the nation in observing National Flag Day on October 12, 2026, honouring the national flag as a symbol of unity, integrity, heritage and national pride.
Adopted on November 3, 1978, the flag was designed by Alwin Bully. It features a green field crossed by yellow, black and white stripes, with a red disc at the centre depicting the Sisserou parrot, surrounded by ten green five-pointed stars. The event marks the nation’s 48th independence day month.
The event marks the beginning of wide range of cultural, community, religious and national activities scheduled from September 19 to November 4, 2026. The minister said,“The theme captures the full story of our nation. It calls us to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point, to preserve the legacy entrusted to us and to work together to create a stronger future for the generations who will follow.”
October will be observed as Patriotism and Heritage month. Special emphasis will be on building national pride among youth and children. In celebrating the Flag Day, the Ministry highlighted the role of the flag in representing Dominica. It described the national flag as a symbol of people rich in their culture and proud of their homeland. It also reflected upon Dominica’s efforts to represent itself as “The Nature Island” of the Caribbean.
The Ministry also re-affirmed its commitment to showcase Dominica as a unique country. The Flag Day instilled a sense of national pride among the citizens and encouraged them to strive to protect the values and culture of the country.
Chief Cultural Officer, Mr Mathew, while engaging with the students, highlighted the importance of teaching patriotism to children right from the very beginning. Students are the country’s future and they should be taught about the uniqueness of their country.
