Dominica: 11 Canefield families to receive climate resilient homes

The first 11 families in Canefield East will receive the keys to their climate-resilient homes as Dominica begins the handover of 215 housing units across nine communities.

Dominica: 11 Canefield Families to Receive Climate-Resilient Homes on September 4

Roseau, Dominica: Around 11 families in Canefield East will receive new climate-resilient homes on Friday (September 4, 2026) at 4: 30 pm through an official handing over ceremony. Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit announced and said that these 11 families are cordially invited into the “Welcome Home Ceremony.”

Melissa Poponne Skerrit, Housing Minister of Dominica stated that this is the time to celebrate these 11 new chapters that will begin tomorrow. “With 6 more homes to commence construction soon, please join us in welcoming the first 11 families to their new hurricane resilient homes,” said the minister.

The Welcome Home Ceremonies will commence on Friday and families will receive their keys to their homes in several sets. Around 215 housing units will be distributed in nine communities, aiming to fulfill their ambitions of becoming world’s first climate resilient homes.

Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, “This month, we begin the handover of 215 new, modern and resilient homes and apartment units across nine communities. Promises made. Promises kept.”

The communities will be Canefield East, Trafalgar, Vielle Case, Paix Bouche, Pointe Michel, Grand Bay, Penville, Wesley and Woodford Hill. Melissa Skerrit added, “The promises made and kept. I’m pleased to announce the upcoming handover of 215 homes and apartment units.”

She said that securing the safety and comfort of our nation's families throughout the island. She also thanked the talented local contractors and skilled tradesmen who constructed these beautiful homes.

Melissa Skerrit added that handovers commence this month and she is eagerly looking forward to telling the people “Welcome Home.”

Climate Resilient Homes is an initiative that was started by the government of Dominica as part of their efforts to become the world’s first climate-resilient country. It is aimed at providing homes to the citizens in different communities free of cost who have lost their houses due to the wrath of Hurricane Maria.
