Trans Guyana Airways Cessna veers off Mabaruma runway; no injuries reported

Guyana: A Trans Guyana Airways aircraft went off the runway at Mabaruma in Guyana’s Region One on Thursday morning. The pilot told the authorities that he spotted a dog moving towards the runway during landing.

The Cessna Caravan, registered 8R-GCC, was landing at around 8:15 am on September 17 when the incident took place. According to the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), preliminary information shows that the aircraft experienced a runway excursion.

Public Communications Consultant for Trans Guyana Airways, Kit Nascimento, confirmed that there were twelve passengers traveling in the aircraft. He said that pilot Jessica Ramcharitar saw a black dog approaching the runway when the plane was nearing its touchdown point.

She hit the brakes aggressively to avoid hitting the dog. The aircraft skidded beyond the end of the runway before spinning sideways. The authorities confirmed no injuries or casualties during the incident.

An investigation by the GCAA has been launched into this case. The Accident and Investigation Team of GCAA has been dispatched to Mabaruma to examine the aircraft, runway, and situation that led to the incident.

“There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident. The GCAA has dispatched its Accident and Investigation Team to the site to conduct a thorough assessment,” said the authority in a press release.

This incident has been categorized as runway excursion, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the series of events leading to this incident.

It follows another unusual runway incident involving Trans Guyana Airways. An aircraft from the same airline was forced off the runway of Eugene F. Correia International Airport in April after it supposedly hit a capybara on its way to landing. There were no injuries during that incident.

Investigation into the recent excursion remains ongoing.
