SUV damaged in suspected arson attack in Belize City

Belize: A car in Belize City was burned in a suspected arson attack early Monday morning. The incident took place on Rasta Street.

According to the Belize Police Department, officers found a black 2011 Nissan Rogue that sustained damage from fire in its rear passenger side including the backseat and passenger-side window.

The car belongs to a 26-year-old security officer, who told the police that he left the vehicle parked outside his yard at around 9:00 pm on Sunday night before entering his house and going to sleep.

Police said that a grey Caravan without license plates was spotted in the vicinity at around 4:15 am on August 31, 2026. Soon after, the Nissan Rogue was set ablaze. It was allegedly observed that a person entered the Caravan and drove off towards Central American Boulevard.

The Belize Fire Service responded to the scene and managed to control the fire. Police have not yet estimated the value of the damage and are working to determine whether the fire was intentional or accidental.

No possible motive is yet known, as the investigations into the fire remain ongoing.

Locals have taken to social media sharing their prayers for the victim. One individual commented, “Hoping the fire was not intentional and the man and his family are okay. Police should investigate qucikly and find those responsible.”

Another said, “Someone could have been injured by the fire or it could have spread to the house and neighbouring areas. Something is wrong with people now a days, they dont take anyones life seriously. They should be strictly punished.”
