Antigua and Barbuda: Gasoline prices have risen for the second time in just over a month, with the pump price increasing by EC$1.49 to EC$17.99 per gallon from October 1.

The latest adjustment brings the total increase since September to EC$3.49 per gallon. Gasoline had previously risen by EC$2, from EC$14.50 to EC$16.50 per gallon on September 1.

The motorists will witness immediate impact. A purchase of 10 gallons of gasoline will now cost EC$179.90, which will be an increase of EC$14.90 as compared to current prices. Prime Minister Gaston Browne has pointed to rising international energy costs and global conflicts which are putting pressure on local prices. He linked the latest price rise to instability in relations between the USA and Iran, while speaking at a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy to celebrate the 77th Anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

“When these conflicts take place, even though we are not close to them geographically, the impact on us is disproportionate,” Browne said. The price rise has added another pressure to transportation costs for households and businesses. Higher fuel prices can adversely impact businesses, especially those dependent upon transportation.

A press release issued by the West Indies Oil Company states that the price rise is to take effect from October 2, 2026 on Finance Ministry’s instructions. A household purchasing 10 gallons each week will have to spend nearly EC$140 more over four weeks than it did before there was a rise in gasoline prices.

The consumers will also have to brace for higher electricity price rise after AUPA increased its fuel rates. As per WIOC’s latest memorandum, the wholesale price of gasoline now stands at EC$16.91 per gallon. The price of ultra-low sulphur diesel remains unchanged at EC$18.83 per gallon. Its wholesale price is EC$17.88, with a dealer margin of 95 cents.

The WIOC chief Executive Officer Gregory F. Georges did not say as to how long the increased prices will remain in place. But the price rise is expected to hit the Antigua economy hard.
