American man found dead aboard cruise ship after arrival at Great Stirrup Cay

Bahamas: A 52-year-old American citizen was found dead aboard a cruise ship after it docked at the Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas on Wednesday. The local police received a report shortly after 7 am on September 16, concerning an apparent suicide aboard the vessel.

Officers assigned to Great Stirrup Cay, along with detectives from New Providence, boarded the ship and were directed to its medical facility. They located the deceased man and started investigating the circumstances of his death.

“According to the initial report, shortly after 7:00 a.m., police in The Berry Islands received information regarding an apparent suicide aboard a cruise ship that had arrived at Great Stirrup Cay. In response, police officers assigned to Great Stirrup Cay, along with detectives from New Providence, boarded the vessel and were directed to the medical facility, where they located the deceased and commenced an investigation,” shared the Royal Bahamas Police Force via an official press release on Facebook.

According to the preliminary information, the incident took place on Tuesday, September 15, when the ship was on its journey from Florida to Great Stirrup Cay. Police said that the deceased man’s wife found him motionless in the bathroom. He was found hanging from a clothing rack with a belt.

Emergency medical assistance was requested, but efforts to save the man were unsuccessful. The man was declared dead by the ship’s doctor at around 4:05 pm, while his body was later taken into the medical room of the ship.

Investigators said that the preliminary findings suggest that the couple had an argument prior to the incident. The name of the deceased and other details about the argument have not been disclosed by the authorities so far.

An autopsy will be carried out to help the authorities to establish the cause of death. The police are currently gathering more information as part of the investigation.
