Youth expresses concerns over conflict in Team Unity administration

St. Kitts and Nevis have been left in a state of confusion, as they do not understand Team Unity’s mandate, nor do they know what they stand for.

Basseterre: “For 7 years, the young people of St. Kitts and Nevis have been left in a state of confusion, as they do not understand Team Unity’s mandate, nor do they know what they stand for. After last weekend’s convention, there is further confusion,” Press Release of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party quotes a concerned youth.

“There was no clear outline of plans that would seek to benefit the nations’ youths. There was nothing that showed Team Unity has any intention to create opportunities – whether jobs or scholarships or create avenues that young people can blossom and thrive.

Instead, what we heard was a ‘show & tell’ of all their achievements & all they have accomplished, as a means of boasting infront of their ‘brothers’ in the Team Unity Family. A wise man once said, things done for the people must not be recounted or used for fame or political gain. Yet all Ministers boasted about things done in the past, some even went deep down in the archives to recall things they did in their constituency, but failed to mention any present and future accomplishments, especially with regards to young people. Why is that?

Young people have been placed on the back burner and are only consulted and called upon when there is a youth gap to be filled or a youth perspective is needed.

The Team Unity administration spoke of a ‘Stronger, Safer Future’, where is the stronger and safer future? Whilst some are able to collect ministerial salaries and open businesses that would be contracted by the same ministry they operate, where is the opportunity for the youths? When persons are being victimized because of their party affiliation or because of who their mother or father is, is this the safer future we boasted about? There are gangmen that are being paid handsomely, whilst honest and hardworking young people can’t get jobs, economic costs or even scholarship opportunities because ‘nuh money deh’!

All across the nation youths are crying out for access. All they are asking for is a voice and an opportunity. Their pleas are falling on deaf ears as the people elected to govern squabble.

It is time for our young people to wake up and start to understand the politics. A man can give you $100 to buy 10lbs of fish, whilst another can offer fishing classes and subsidies on fishing equipment and material that will help you to catch hundreds of fishes and earn an income. Listen to the Party who is interested in your holistic development rather than the party who comes once every five years and gives a small change in exchange for your vote.

The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party under the NextGen Agenda for Transformative Action, will deliver for the young people of St. Kitts and Nevis. Its team of youthful and dynamic candidates will offer the best representation and will make the empowerment of youth their top priority.”
