Weather: Nigel continues to strengthen in the Atlantic with no land areas in its path. There are two areas are outlined by the National Hurricane Center to watch.
One area outlined is off the Southeast Coast will look to bring inclement weather with rain and coastal impacts from Florida to even north of the Carolina’s. Another will move off the coast of Africa this week and look to develop.
Most long-term guidance curves this entity northward, well east of the Caribbean. Lot of time to watch what it does. No tropical threats for South Mississippi for at least the following week. However, hurricane season is far from over.
Tropical Storm Nigel developed late last night. Nigel is strengthening and is expected to be a hurricane soon. Most models develop Nigel into a category 2 hurricane. Due to going over warm water it would not be impossible for Nigel to become a category 3 hurricane.
Right now, Nigel is no threat to any land. Later next week we could see some development in the Caribbean. A few of the models develop a tropical system in the Caribbean and have it impacting the southeast coast. However, that is several days away, and a lot will change before then. As I often state, until a tropical system develops the models have higher error rates. The next name on the list is Ophelia.
Day temperatures are still expected to be above normal during the next 24 hours, reaching about 34 to 35 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. Night temperatures will linger around 28 to 29 degrees Celsius. The public is therefore asked to take the necessary precautions to avoid heat related complications.
Marine conditions: Smooth seas are in place on the protected sites. Smooth to slight seas are
noted on the south sites. Generally moderate seas are in place over the east to northwest coastal sections. Seas are here in the range of 4 to 5 feet along the coastal regions.
