UNCTAD: PM Mottley presents plan of manufacturing COVID-19 vaccine in Barbados

After highlighting the issues of the global investment in proper distribution of COVID-19 vaccine now, Prime Minister Mia Amor Motley used the UN Conference on Trade and Development platform to request vaccine manufacturing on the island.

PM Mottley made this request as she was speaking that they would be increasing the availability of the vaccine in the region once they started manufacturing or bottling.

PM Mottley stressed that the COVID-19 outbreak might be slow down once the availability of the vaccine in the region increases and globally also.

While talking with journalists, PM Mottley said, “The pandemic will finish when we decide as a people globally that it must finish and until such time we will continue to have persons affected by it and we are in the race against early mutations and variants that may well be worse than what we see in Delta which is bad enough. We can only ask that all of our actions move to the point of vaccine equity, and we can only ask that there also be an urgency about identifying locations such as ours and others in other parts of the world to become locations for the manufacturing and or bottling of vaccines so as to ensure a more ready capacity to those most in need.”

During the press briefing on the opening day of the UNCTAD at Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, PM Mottley talked about the possibility of the establishment of the vaccine factory to be realistic.

PM Mottley said that she would not accept that it has been impossible for them to achieve that. She would not be accepting that it was impossible for vaccine and manufacturing and bottling plants to be made possible in each and every region in this world to ensure the shortest distance to people’s arms. If they could manage that and if they could work to that in UNCTAD then she believed that could be only laying the foundation for the conquering of this pandemic.
