Trinidad and Tobago: United National Congress (UNC) party’s Public Relations Officer- PRO, Dr Kirk Meighoo, questioned Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley whether he has been following the established COVID-19 protocols. He also directed the government for its “biased” upholding of COVID-19 measures.

In a press release issued on Monday, PRO Dr Meighoo also raised concerns. He said that PM Rowley’s latest positive COVID-19 test was despite his claim of strict adhesion to all public health regulations, including social distancing sanitization, mask-wearing and washing hands.

He further stated, “This reminds us of the exemptions given to Keith Rowley’s daughter to visit him for Christmas, to Delcy Rodriguez and her planeload of Maduro’s oil executives to meet Keith Rowley and Stuart Young without quarantine, and to 17 Chinese nationals who were permitted to leave and re-enter Trinidad and Tobago exempted from quarantining due to ‘diplomatic immunity. As if covid follows diplomatic protocols?”

Dr Meighoo further said that should ordinary citizens received vaccines. They are still required to follow the COVID-19 protocols.

He further complained, “At the same time, the government without any scientific justification, orders the small man and woman to shut down their businesses, forcing them to lose income or their jobs, crushes social and family life, destroyed children’s education, implements laws to charge poor citizens with heavy fines, all this in the name of preventing the spread of COVID-19.”

Additionally, he stated, “Yet PNM big shot financiers hold big weddings in the violation of COVID-19 regulations, very likely with government Ministers in full attendance. This is discriminatory, unjust and unfair. It must stop.”

The PRO, Dr Meighoo, added that the current government’s policies and mitigation strategy must be led by scientific evidence. The nation must learn to live with the viruses and COVID-19 variants, just like the other illness with more significant or similar mortality and infection rates.

Consequently, Dr Meighoo stated, “It is high time to end this madness, open theft of the treasury, and throwing out our fundamental rights.”
