UDP displays concern over spike in crimes, asks government to intervene

The UDP party - United Democratic Party of Belize has expressed grave concern over the spike in violent crimes on the island.

Belize: The UDP party – United Democratic Party of Belize has expressed grave concern over the spike in violent crimes on the island.

Especially the 4 Belize City murders in 5 days reportedly resulting from a gang war that is terrorizing the nation’s population centre and commercial hub.

UDP officials stated, “We call on the Briceno government to intervene immediately to arrest the murderer and mayhem in the streets of Belize City and other parts of the nation, such as – Punta Gorda, which has recently seen an unparalleled rise in violence and gang-related crimes.”

UDP added, “We request the current Ministers of Police to start executing the brilliant ideas he had about crime-fighting before he got the job on November 11, 2020.”

“The Opposition party is ready to form a bipartisan – crime prevention committee along with the Briceno administration composed of our – Shadow Minister of Police, Shadow Minister of Youth, Shadow Minister of Human Development and the respective government ministers so that we can efficiently tackle crime through the formulation and execution of a comprehensive strategy which must include components addressing the root causes,”- UDP cited.

UDP concluded that “This is the time to unite on this crucial national issue.” The UDP further acknowledged that fighting crime is everybody’s business but asserts that it is the government that has the responsibility to lead the effort, bringing key stakeholders together and matching its rhetoric while in opposition with the resources it now controls as the administration in charge.

According to the – UN Office on drugs and crime, because of the small population and high per capita murder rate, the Belize island consistently ranks among the worst five nations in the world for – homicides. The island equates to approximately 40 homicides per 100,000 citizens.
