Trinidad and Tobago: The leader of the opposition party- Kamla Persad Bissesar, has once again blamed Prime Minister for the COVID-19 crisis on the island. She stated, “T&T is facing its worst crisis, due to the PM Rowley’s regime failure.”
She pointed the work of the ruling party and asserted, “The Rowley government has run out of ideas on- how to deal with this health crisis, and our country’s future is now even more doubtful.”
“After one year of the pandemic where other countries are returning to normalcy, T&T is facing its worst crisis, and this is a dark moment in the history of our nation, the day when the PM Rowley abandoned the people of T&T.”
She further stated, “Earlier this year, when the government had the opportunity to move quickly to secure COVID vaccines, they floundered, and as a result, we are left behind. Moreover, the government’s failure to secure our borders resulted in the entry of the Brazilian variant in T&T.”
“Now, our healthcare system is on the verge, and PM Rowley introduced harsher restrictions that will decimate micro, small and medium-sized businesses and would lead to huge job losses. Most concerning is the revelation that the – Chief Medical Officer first raised the possibility of the current COVID-19 crisis in March, but no action was taken.”
“Before Easter, the PM encouraged persons to travel to T&T. Now we are living with the outcomes of Rowley’ failed leadership. PM has shown his absence of love for our country and abdication of his responsibilities by sending almost the entire workforce of our nation without any support to put food on the table to their homes,”- stated Bissesar.
“The Opposition- UNC supports actions to protect the health and wellbeing of our citizens, but we can’t support hundreds of thousands who are left without the ability to take care of their families.”
She added that “This Ruling party has found the money to pay millions of dollars in rent to the families of the Cabinet Ministers and finance contracts of other senior ministers. Still, they do not have any single dollar to help the taxpayers of this country during their time of need. From day one, we knew that the government was mismanaging COVID-19, and today the picture is clear.”
“From the very start, PM Keith Rowley and his government had been playing games with the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020 January, we requested the government to take this mutant seriously, yet they stood up in Parliament to say that COVID-19 was not urgent. Today, their only accomplishment is to boast of 1 million syringes in the stock, and irony should not be lost on us that there are no vaccines for those syringes,”- cited PM Rowley.
She further concluded his statement and asserted that “The PM spoke of social support, yet many thousands continue to complain that they have not received any salary relief grant since last year. The same support that the residents of T&T were promised since last year is being repeated.”
She also questioned the government about their plan in tackling the virus and cited, “What is the government’s plan after the lockdown ends? Are we going to stay in lockdown until the PM feels that it is safe to reopen? or do we stay in lockdown until a friend of the PNM secures a COVID-19 vaccine contract?”
“The people have the right to know how long these restrictions will remain in effect and what to expect in the future. The Prime Minister continues to fail the entire country with his short-sighted leadership and ad-hoc decision-making.”
