Roseau, Dominica: The office of the Disaster Management of the Commonwealth of Dominica announced that the Tropical Storm FIONA watch was discontinued for the country at around 5:00 am. However, the flood watch remained in effect and citizens are advised to be vigilant.
As at 5:00 am, the Tropical Storm WATCH was DISCONTINUED
for the Commonwealth of Dominica.
• A Flood WATCH remains in effect for the Commonwealth of
Dominica.
On Friday Night, Disaster Management issued a warning that a tropical depression in the Central Atlantic was transformed into Tropical Strom FIONA, which was located about 500 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands.
It was also warned that possible flooding could be caused by Tropical Fiona. It could also turn into a Category 2 Hurricane Near the Bahamas.
“Fiona’ was moving in a westerly direction toward the northern Leeward Islands, and the centre of Fiona was expected to pass about 100 miles to the north of Dominica late Friday into Saturday.
So far, TS Fiona has caused destruction in some regions of the Caribbean. Guadeloupe faced one fatality and devastation of the infrastructure across the nation. The Storm watch is still in effect for the Leeward Islands.
A Hurricane Warning has been issued for Puerto Rico and a Hurricane Watch is in effect for parts of Dominican Republic after Tropical Storm Fiona threaded between Guadeloupe and Montserrat while entering the eastern Caribbean and dropped heavy rains over the northern Leeward Islands.
POSSIBLE IMPACTS ON DOMINICA
• Rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches (75 to 125 mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas are expected over the next 12 hours.
• Possible flash flooding and landslides.
