Trinidad and Tobago police receives homicide investigation training from US Embassy

On Thursday, the US Embassy started a virtual session during which they gave training to the police services of Trinidad and Tobago. This virtual session is for training the police staff in advanced homicide investigation techniques.

According to the statement, 30 officers of TTPS Homicide Bureau is being trained by the detectives who are from Plam Beach County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office. This is virtual training.

From September 13-24, the program will run of Advance Homicide Investigation Program. This program mainly focuses on increasing the ability of the TTPS so that they can identify and investigate homicides. This also includes homicide like gang-related homicides. The training would be developing long-standing relations between the PBSO and the TTPS Homicide Bureau. This training had been started from June 2018. Since then, the relations have been building upon the initial PBSO-TTPS homicide investigations.

In this training, they taught how to executes the responsible and complete death investigations and homicides. The training helps to learn how to identify the clue of the gang involved in the homicides. Training helps to improve techniques for doing investigations in communities reluctant to engage with police, and it also increases intelligence-gathering and surveillance capabilities.

Acting Commissioner of Police McDonald Jacob said, “This course could not have come at a better time. At the moment, we are grappling with some gang-related homicides. But I am confident with the experiences and professionalism of members of the Homicide Bureau, we will be able to solve some of them in the shortest possible time.”

A statement stated that the US government till now had contributed an amount of over US$10 million in security assistance to TT.

US charge d’affaires Shante Moore said that they had been given the priority for the US to increase the security of the citizens in TT. This training reflected that commitment and would be developing the capacity of the TTPS to investigate and prevent violent crime and dismantle criminal gangs.
