Trinidad and Tobago: New additional measures announced by PM Rowley, in effect from today 

The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago- Dr Keith Rowley, has announced additional guidelines to the existing public health measures amid a rise in COVID-19 cases on the island

Trinidad and Tobago: The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago– Dr Keith Rowley, has announced additional guidelines to the existing public health measures amid a rise in COVID-19 cases on the island.

These additional measures would be in effect in Trinidad and Tobago from today onwards and would remain in effect till Sunday, May 23, 2021.

Following are the additional measures announced by the PM Rowley –

  • All enterprises that remain open are to be closed by – 8 PM 
  •  All non-essential employees have to work from home
  •  The wearing of masks is mandatory in public places
  • All modes of public transportation to reduce capacity from 75% to 50%
  • Gatherings are limited to no more than 5
  • Businesses that remain open can operate at 50% capacity
  • Domestic workers and gardeners are to remain at home, except in those cases where they are designated as ‘live-in’
  • All restaurants are to remain closed and are asked to refrain from operating any informal delivery service
  •  Membership clubs eg Price Smart will be allowed to remain open for business but for the sale of grocery items ONLY.
  • Even where operations are designated as essential, it is expected that any non-essential personnel will be allowed to work from home
  • All construction services are to be halted.
  • Auto repair garages will operate on an emergency basis only

Few days back PM Rowley during media conference announced restrictions in the COVID-19 safety protocols, these new additional measures are a part of those protocols. 

According to the statistics- the island currently has 12,396 active COVID-19 cases. So far, 8,969 people have been recovered from the virus and Trinidad and Tobago reported a total of 196 deaths so far amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 condition in the island is not well- controlled and the hospitals are running out of space. The PNM government is trying to control the pandemic and it is hoped that these new measures would help to control this pandemic in T&T.
