Trinidad and Tobago: Office of the Chief Secretary – THA of Trinidad and Tobago shared the profile of Akeil Andrews, who founded Beard Boss in 2020 with a focus on providing men with luxury beard products.

Within three years, Beard Boss has been able to expand its product line, which includes a shampoo and two fragranced beard oils, allowing the brand to become a household name.

Andrews said it’s important for men to practice self-care, because when you look good, you feel even better; and the launch of Beard Boss has contributed to a movement of celebrating masculinity. The products can be found at several locations including Waterfront Pharmacy and Island Boyz Barbershop in Scarborough.

1. What can be done to improve the entrepreneurial landscape in Tobago?

Entrepreneurs should become more educated about the selected industry they desire to venture into. Adequate knowledge will allow for greater success of their businesses.

Additionally, taking advantage of customer service training will be an asset, as this creates longevity and brand loyalty.

2. Why did you start your business and who does it serve?

Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, venturing into this field was a natural progression for me, as I always wanted to operate my own business. Beard Boss was founded to allow gentlemen to develop a greater sense of pride in their general demeanor and disposition as a result of how they groom themselves.

3. What three traits must an entrepreneur have to succeed?

Consistency: this trait allows one to establish awareness, build trust and deliver services efficiently and profitably.

  • Persistence: remaining focused and solution-oriented will allow your business to succeed.
  • Creativity: having unique product offerings, coupled with brilliant marketing, allow a business to flourish.

4. What’s one mistake you made in your business and what did you learn from it?

I assumed the entrepreneurial road was an easy one, because my family members who are experienced in this field, would have made it seem so effortless.

However, I adapted to the fast-paced environment that surrounded a growing business and learned skills such as adequate time-management, budgeting analysis, and market research, so that I can have longevity in my business.

5. What advice would you give someone considering entrepreneurship?

Be serious and passionate about your craft, and let God do the rest. You’ll experience late nights and early mornings, but you’ll reap the benefits of hard work.
