Bahamas:Prime Minister of Bahamas Dr Hubert Minnis, announced good news for the nation’s students to reopen School for 2020/2021 Easter term.
The Department of Education wishes to advise the general public that all government schools will reopen for instruction on Monday.
Office of Prime Minister Bahamas specified that “Due to the current Emergency Powers Orders, students on the islands of New Providence, Abaco, Eleuthera and Exuma will not report to a school site. Still, they will log in to their School via the Department of Education’s virtual learning platform to attend School virtually. ”
Students on the other islands will report to their school campus for face-to-face instruction.
All school-based staff (i.e. teachers, school administrators and support staff) including those posted on the islands of New Providence, Abaco, Eleuthera and Exuma, are expected to report to their school campus unless otherwise permitted by their principal.
On this step, many Bahamians reacted in different ways; Joy Favor, a resident of Nassau, said, “The Private schools will continue to have the advantage because of the smaller numbers. All I can say is try to get your kids out of govt schools cuz this isn’t making any sense.”
Another resident, Heather, raised a question in front of the government.
He asked, “But why? Why must the children in Abaco suffer for the government’s stupidity? Why can’t they access education like the rest of Bahamians? Abaco can not function virtually. There is not consistent electricity, much less wifi. Wear masks and social distance and let the children have some sense of normalcy.”
Merka and parent of Bahamas said, “Well, my child go to private school, and it’s face to face three days out the week n I love it. Thanks !!”
Karina noted on this decision that Abaco kids have been outside of a school for over a year, they need School, structure and back in classrooms.
