Roseau, Dominica: The Commonwealth of Dominica is all set to go into polls on December 6, 2022, and amid this snap general elections, another political movement – Team Unity Dominica (TUD) has emerged with a fresh look to challenge the current ruling Dominica Labour Party.

After the announcement of the snap general elections by Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, General Secretary of TUD – Alex Bruno, stated that this is the time to decide the best interest of the people and the country and not the party.

Alex Bruno outlined that his party (TUD) will contest the snap general elections on December 6, 2022. He stressed that they are ready for the upcoming elections and will submit the nomination of the candidates on November 18, 2022.

He asserted that his party stands ready and willing to contest the elections. He also called for the proper strategic guidelines to decide the future of the country.

On calling the general elections two years earlier by PM Roosevelt Skerrit, Bruno mentioned that it was within his constitutional authority to call the election at the time he did. He stressed that PM Skerrit had used its constitutional rights, which is not wrong.

He further slammed United Workers Party’s decision not to contest the elections.

According to sources, it was revealed that many aspirants from UWP are likely to contest the elections under the banner of Team Unity Dominica. It is expected that at least 9 out of 21 seats would be contested by candidates of UWP under TUD.

Earlier, the opposition- United Workers Party, announced to boycott of the snap general elections as they have been fighting with their internal conflicts. They won three seats out of 21 in the last general elections held in 2019.

UWP MPs to contest independently

Right after the announcement of UWP to boycott the elections, new conflicts arose in the party as winning candidates renounced the party’s decision to sit out the upcoming elections. Sources inside the United Workers Party told Associates Times that Member Parliaments from Marigot, Roseau North and Salisbury – Lennox Linton, Daniel Lugar and Hector John have told the party leadership they will contest individually if the party does not want to go into the election fray.

United Workers Party now stand at the phase where they have no leader, no policy, no agenda, and no idea to contest the general elections. As per the various political researchers and common people of Dominica, the opposition party has decided not to contest the elections to save their image or personal interest.

Their decision to boycott elections became a topic of criticism for the people as they asserted how they could give their future to such a party, which is just making lame excuses to get away from the public domain.

According to the sources, due to the entire situation of the party, their political leaders and members are leaving it with a significant number. It is speculated that they could join the newly emerging Team Unity Dominica party as they decided to contest the elections.

It is anticipated that TUD could emerge as the main opposition against Dominica Labour Party. The party could be strong to compete with DLP.

However, this will take huge time as the party is fresh and new. It is tough to win the trust of the people, especially when the country is ruled by one of the best governments. Dominicans have been satisfied with the working of the DLP-led government.

DLP, ruling the country since 2004, has an efficient leader, true policies, and an agenda to serve the nation. As per the sources, the work done by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit-led administration has been evidently visible that Dominica now stood at the phase where big and developed countries look out for its approach towards development.

According to political analysts, TUD could emerge as a good opposition party, but they can’t be victorious due to two main reasons. One, they are very fresh and new, and it will take time for them to become even that strong opposition party. Second, PM Skerrit-led administration made Dominica one of the most efficient developing countries. The opposition party will never find any agenda to form the government.
