The Government of Bermuda has upgraded the Hurricane watch to a Hurricane WARNING. This means that hurricane conditions have changed from possible to expected across the WARNING area
Fortunately, Bermuda should be spared the brunt of the storm, although tropical storm conditions are still likely. Unfortunately, Atlantic Canada will likely experience 90 mph+ wind gusts, flooding rains, and storm surges this weekend.Â
Spiral bands associated with Hurricane Fiona will continue to generate unsettled conditions across Puerto Rico and parts of the Virgin Islands today into tomorrow.
As per the U.S. National Hurricane Centre, FIONA smashed about 15 miles south-southeast of Mayaguez with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. It was moving to the northwest at nine mph (15 kph).Â
The passage of Tropical Storm FIONA created heavy flooding and rainfall, and at least one person has been declared dead in Guadeloupe. A house was washed away by strong flood waters in Basse-Terre, the capital of the country, with one occupant still inside.
NEMO also strongly recommends that the public avoid sea bathing activities for the next 24 hours, and urges residents and businesses situated near the coastline to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect their properties.
The office of the Disaster Management of the Commonwealth of Dominica announced that the Tropical Storm FIONA watch was discontinued for the country at around 5:00 am. However, the flood watch remained in effect and citizens are advised to be vigilant.Â
Through his social media, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated that people should be taken every precautionary measure and monitor the entire situation
The Storm is expected to affect the areas throughout the weekend, which would lead the cloud to overcast skies. There will be periods of rain and gusty winds possible to tropical storm forces. The showers are predicted to remain moderate to torrential at times.Â
