SWIMMING: Jordan Crooks wins Southeastern Conference Swimmer of Year award

Cayman Islands Jordan Crooks of the University of Tennessee secured victory at the Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Year award.

Cayman Islands Jordan Crooks of the University of Tennessee secured victory at the Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Year award. This season Jordan became the World Short Course Champion in the 50-metre freestyle in 20.46.

In the semis, he set the CARIFTA regional mark of 20.31, which is the fourth fastest in history. At the 2023 SEC Championships, he won the 50-yard freestyle in 17.93, the CARIFTA regional standard and the second fastest time in history. He completed the sprint double taking the 100-yard freestyle in 41.19.

He won the Silver in the 100-yard butterfly in 44.37. In the heats, he posted a CARIFTA regional best of 44.04. In the 200 yard medley his team won in 1:21.43 , he recorded the CARIFTA regional best and fastest butterfly split in history of 18.90.

The Vounteers were second in the 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:15.34. They won the Silver in the 400 yard medley relay in 3:02.51. The 400 freestyle relay saw him recording the CARIFTA regional best split of all time of 40.59. The team won in 40.25.

For his efforts he won the Swimmer of the Meet and co Commissioner’s Trophy awards for the being the highest point scorer. This is only the second time the CARIFTA region has won the highest point scorer award. The last time was in 2010 through the efforts of his countryman regional legend Olympian Shaune Fraser of Florida.Fraser was also coached by the regional icon Olympic Gold medallist Anthony Nesty.

At the NCAA Championships he became the first CARIFTA region champion in the 50 yard freestyle in 18.32. He had improved showing in all his events. In the heats of the 100 yard freestyle he swam a CARIFTA region best of 40.92 before placing fifth in 41.03. In the 100 butterfly he was fifth in 44.29.There were top eight performances for all his relays. In the 200 yard medley relay sixth 1:21.59,200 freestyle relay 1:14.68, 400 medley relay sixth 3:02.05 and the 400 freestyle relay seventh 2:47.19.In that relay he produced the CARIFTA region best split of 40.59, the 20th fastest in history.
