St Lucia to open visual arts exhibition at Sir Arthur Lewis Community College

The government of St Lucia shared an update on the visual arts exhibition that will open at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

Castries, St Lucia: The government of St Lucia shared an update on the visual arts exhibition that will open at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

The Exhibition will showcase works of art from artists around St. Lucia under the theme “Stories of Courage in the Americas: Resistance to Slavery and Unity against Racism”.

The Exhibition is the result of a Visual Arts Competition launched in April as part of observances of People of African Descent in the Americas and in remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade by the Organisation of American States (OAS) who collaborated with the College to put on two major activities.

The Exhibition also received significant support from MeCurator, led by Buki R Kahane, who brings her years of experience working with artists, understanding their work and drawing on her knowledge and awareness of current art practices to this Exhibition.

The Exhibition will showcase more than 40 pieces of work in painting, digital art, craft, sculpture, photography and mixed media. Artists from as young as 14 years, along with more established artists, have made submissions.

Renowned artists Alwyn St. Omer, Finola Jennings-Clark, Kirk Elliott, Naja Simeon, Urmie Persaud and Calixte George Jr., will serve as judges for the competition. Participants will win monetary prizes and other attractive prizes from M&C Group of Companies, The Body Holiday St. Lucia, Bay Gardens Resorts, The Landings St. Lucia, Jade Mountain, KFC, and Oasis Restaurant. The College also received significant support from LUCELEC, St. Lucia Distillers and Blue Waters.

The Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition follows the first activity held in a lecture delivered by Dr Keith Nurse, Principal of the College, on the topic “Carnival and the Black Atlantic: Festivals, Social Movements and Diasporas”.

The Exhibition will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, and Friday May 27 at the SALCC Innovation Hub at the Morne Campus.
