Castries, St Lucia: St Lucia Labour Party condemned and get appalled by the hypocrisy of the United Workers Party, its Leader Allen Chastanet and its operatives, among the most notable Therold Prudent, who lost the bid for UWP Chairman.

While issuing the press release, they stated that UWP and its members are now desperate to remain politically relevant; and, of course, shameless former Minister Fortuna Belrose, who has now joined a protest outside the George Odlum Stadium started by a former office assistant to former Dennery South Representative, Edmund Estaphane.

The press release further reads, “The United Workers Party has learned little from the rejection of their deceit by the electorate less than a year ago.”

It underlined that the management of the St. Jude Hospital Redevelopment Project by the Chastanet Cabinet can only be described as callous, reckless, wasteful and lacking any concern for the wellbeing of the people in the south.

St Lucia Labour Party also highlighted some irrefutable facts to expose the UWP hypocrisy. It outlined:

  • By 2016, the SLP had brought the St Jude Hospital Redevelopment project close to completion with an additional $50 million left to be spent, which would have brought the total project cost to $148 million.
  • When the UWP came to office in 2016, they stopped construction of the hospital and did no work for four years, despite advice to the contrary from competent technical experts, and in the process wasted $7 million by demolishing two newly constructed buildings.
  • In 2020 as elections approached, the UWP hurriedly wasted another $118 million on the partial construction of a structure which qualified construction and engineering experts advised was not suitable for its purpose.
  • Documentation found at Attorney General’s Office dated July 15, 2021, 11 days before the General Elections, showed $70.75 million was awarded for two contracts to Fresh Start, including a finance cost of $6.66 million, which would take expenditure on the structure to $188 million, without furnishings, $40 million more than the original hospital.

Further, the current Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Philip J. Pierre, has included in the 2022-23 budget an allocation to restart construction of the hospital in the coming months and to bring the original project to completion in the shortest possible time.

Prime Minister Pierre has also budgeted for remedial works to be undertaken at the stadium to improve conditions while work continues at the original hospital.

The SLP is calling on UWP Leader Allen Chastanet and Fortuna Belrose to stop the hypocrisy and apologise publicly on behalf of the Administration to which they belonged, just months ago, for stopping the completion of the hospital project for four (4) years and the reckless wastage of hundreds of millions of the countries resources.
