St Kitts and Nevis: St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party outlined the importance of the freedom of the press that fosters the development of dialogue in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis. 

Leader of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party, Dr Terrance Drew, in observance of World Press Freedom Day, gave the reassurance to the public and, by extension, members of the media of his commitment “towards nurturing a free and fair press environment that fosters the development of dialogue in the Federation of St.Kitts-Nevis and Nevis.”

Emphasizing the importance of freedom of the Press, Dr Terrance Drew asserted, “Today marks the observance of World Press Freedom Day, and so I wish to reassure the public and by extension members of the media that I genuinely commit myself towards nurturing a free and fair press environment that fosters the development of dialogue in the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis.”

He further applauded local media workers and stated that this day follows Workers’ International Day (Labour Day/May Day); he wished to praise the contributions of all local media workers who are part of the critically crucial fourth estate of the nation.

“Additionally, I take this opportunity on this occasion to congratulate the executive committee of the newly reconstituted Media Association of St.Kitts and Nevis,” underlined Dr Drew. 

According to UNESCO, the 2022 Theme for World Press Freedom Day is’ Journalism under digital siege’. It “must focus on the various ways which could be helpful and prevent the surveillance of the journalism and digitally-mediated attacks on journalists.”

He said that despite such challenges that affect journalists on a global scale, he encouraged the local media practitioners to remain focused on their roles and responsibilities in carrying out their duties.

Earlier, on May 2, 2022, St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party held a nationwide march in observance of Labour Day. Leaders of SKNLP extended gratitude to the people of St Kitts and Nevis for coming out to march for the better. 

They stated that the party would keep up the momentum and continue fighting for all the people of this country.
