St Kitts and Nevis to host installation ceremony for first female Governor-General Marcella Liburd 

The historic installation ceremony of the first female Governor-General of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Marcella Althea Liburd JP, will take place at Government House on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 5:00 pm.

St Kitts and Nevis: The historic installation ceremony of the first female Governor-General of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Marcella Althea Liburd JP, will take place at Government House on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 5:00 pm. 

Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew shared the update on social media and asked the people to stay tune in to the ceremony. He added that the significant event will be attended by specially invited guests from a wide cross-section of society.

The installation ceremony will be broadcast live on ZIZ Radio (96 FM) and ZIZ TV (Channel 5 in St. Kitts and Channel 98 in Nevis. It will also be streamed live at www.zizonline.com

PM Dr Terrance Drew also extended greetings and congratulations to Marcella Liburd for her appointment as the governor-general of St Kitts and Nevis. He said that last night was a historic event for the twin-island Federation. 

“For the first time in our nation’s history, a female Governor-General was sworn in. Marcella Liburd JP has been a trailblazer throughout her career. She piloted several legislations over the years, including the Domestic Violence Act and Equal Pay Act. In 2011, Liburd was nominated among prominent women for her contributions to the development of gender equality, “said the prime minister. 

While applauding Liburd, PM Terrance Drew added that in 2013, she became the first female to be elected as Chairperson of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party in its then 81-year history and in 2018, she became the first female Deputy National Leader of the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party. 

He cited, “Congratulations to Her Excellency Marcella Liburd JP on this tremendous achievement.” 

Deputy Prime Minister of the Federation- Geoffrey Hanley also shared the update on the installation ceremony of Marcell Liburd on his social media.

Liburd will succeed S.W. Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, KC, JP, LL.D and served St Kitts and Nevis in various forms such as a teacher, lawyer, Senator, Deputy Speaker, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Cabinet Minister of the Federal Government.
