St Kitts and Nevis: The government of the twin-island Federation officially launched its 2021 Population and Housing Census. The announcement was made during an event held at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Conference Room on Thursday, March 17, 2022.

While emphasizing the launch of the activity, Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Elreter Simpson-Browne, noted that launch is significant for the ministry as it provides necessary information which helps for economic growth and improved standard living in St Kitts and Nevis.

Permanent Secretary Browne said that the government had conducted the last Census in 2011, which shows that the population of St Kitts and Nevis stood at 47,195. She stated that the previous data is outdated and not applicable for making major meaningful policy and planning in the growth of the country.

“The Population and Housing Census is an essential source of information as it gathered the information for the proper strategic planning in areas such as housing and education and the sustainable growth and development of our economy”, Browne added.

She also affirmed that the data is essential to the Ministry of Sustainable Development as it provides guidance in the decision-making process in various filed such as allocation of lands, approval of the Poverty Alleviation Programme and the development of residential, commercial and industrial areas.

So, that’s why Browne urged the citizens and residents of St Kitts and Nevis to cooperate with the authorities, give them their full support and actively participate in the Census. She added that the department only wants to ensure that every citizen and resident in St Kitts and Nevis get involved in the counting.
