Basseterre: Minister of Health, Akilah Byron-Nisbett, and others publicly praised industrious and pioneering women in St Kitts and Nevis who have contributed to the nation’s development.

“While we celebrated International Women’s Day (March 8) by honouring women in leadership around the world, we must also remember the women in our communities who are working to achieve an equal future here in St. Kitts and Nevis.” Minister Byron-Nisbett spoke on Leadership Matters on women taking brave measures to transform their own lives and communities, women who are reshaping what we consider to be ideal career choices and who are ready to speak their truth while doing so. “I am delighted to be a part of a government in St. Kitts and Nevis that is devoted to true gender equality.”

She expressed her delight at the Federation’s women excelling in leaps and bounds.

Minister Byron-Nisbett said, “I continue to be astounded by the work being done by powerful women across St. Kitts and Nevis, and women who, even in these uncertain times, continue to launch new businesses and be leaders within their communities.” “We are proud to state that all women deserve a sustainable, peaceful future with equal rights and opportunity for everyone.”

Minister Byron-Nisbett said that, based on UN data, 2022 is considered “pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the twenty-first century, and it is their belief that without gender equality today, a sustainable future and an equal future remains a pipe dream.”

However, she did point out that attaining this would necessitate a whole-of-society approach.

“While we have made progress toward a more equal society in which everyone has a chance to flourish,” Minister Byron-Nisbett stated, “there is still much more to be done.” “We can only achieve a stronger, safer future for St. Kitts and Nevis if we rely on the talent, experience, and ambition of our strong women here in the Federation.”

Minister Byron-Nisbett stated that she is committed to giving women in St. Kitts and Nevis every opportunity to lead the Federation to a brighter future.
