St Kitts and Nevis government calls new session of Parliament on October 25

The opening of the New Session of Parliament of St Kitts and Nevis is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Royal Ballroom in Frigate Bay. 

St Kitts and Nevis: The opening of the New Session of Parliament of St Kitts and Nevis is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort Royal Ballroom in Frigate Bay. 

The Opening Session will be preceded by a Guard of Honour which will take place at 9:30 am in the Grand Plaza. In accordance with Section 46 (1) of the Constitution of St. Christopher and Nevis, the Proclamation Summoning the New Session of the National Assembly will be read. 

Following the Proclamation, a new Speaker of the House will be elected and, subsequently, a Deputy Speaker. The Speaker of the National Assembly has been elected by the Members. As the presiding officer, he/she decides all questions of procedure, maintains order with complete impartiality and protects the privilege of freedom of speech by ensuring that all Members are given a fair opportunity to express their views – but within the rules. 

The newly elected Speaker will give his/her announcements which will be followed by the Throne Speech by Governor General’s Deputy, Her Excellency Marcella Althea Liburd Esq, JP. The first meeting of the National Assembly will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 10:00 am at the National Assembly Chamber, Government Headquarters, Basseterre. 

Prime Minister Drew said, “As a matter of fact, there is a high possibility that we will have a female Speaker of the House, and there is also the prospect of our first female Governor-General. Let’s stay tuned for announcements. You can look forward to the new opening of Parliament on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, and we encourage all to tune in.”

St Kitts- Nevis Labour Party-led administration will host the parliament session for the first time after commences work in the office. On August 5, 2022, SKNLP emerged victorious with the full majority of eight seats out of 11. 

In just two months after coming into power, Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew led administration announced various big decisions which have been appreciated by the people. 

Recently, the Cabinet of ministers announced the payment of an honorarium of EC $ 2,000.00 for the frontline workers of the COVID-19 pandemic.
