Saint Lucia's Junior Table Tennis Team competed at the Pan American Under 19 Table Tennis Championships at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in West Virginia, USA.

Castries, Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia’s Junior Table Tennis Team competed at the Pan American Under 19 Table Tennis Championships at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center in West Virginia, USA.

The event, which was jointly hosted by USA Table Tennis (USATT) and ITTF Americas, is showcasing 166 table tennis talents across the continent in the U15 and U19 age groups.

The participating countries include Argentina, Aruba, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and the United States of America.

Saint Lucia’s squad was spearheaded by D’Andre Calderon and included Joshua Lubin and Stephen Steele. While in the USA, the three players will be under the watchful eyes of Chris Wells (coach).

In matches played to date, Saint Lucia went down three nil to Brazil and the USA, then lost 3-1 to Mexico and 3-2 to Guatemala. According to Coach Wells: “D’Andre Calderon has been able to hold his own, winning three matches in the team event. He defeated the top two under-19 players from Guatemala as well as the number two player from Mexico”.

Upon conclusion of the event, the championships will qualify two Pan-American singles per gender to the World Youth Championships that will take place from November 26 to December 3, 2023, in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. 

Ministry of Youth Development and Sports of Saint Lucia shared glimpses of the championships. The Ministry also hailed its athletes for their exceptional performance. 

Earlier, a combined 30-member team comprising Under 16 and Under 19 cricketers accompanied by six Officials from the Babonneau Grassroots Cricket community are presently on an inaugural tour to the Commonwealth of Dominica where they are engaged in a series of matches with community teams.

On Monday, July 31 both teams played T20 matches, likewise on Tuesday and Wednesday; all games will be played at Benjamin’s Park, Portsmouth.
