Castries, Saint Lucia: The Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary school choir and band participated in the District 8 Music Festival on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

This was the first full-fledged district festival since the end of the blended approach to instructions as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. It was certainly a fantastic event that brought together all the public schools with their thrilling musical pieces in Saint Lucia

The SCSS choir and band, coordinated by Ken Berrance and assisted by Hadams Louisy, helped to prepare the beautiful voices and developing musicians for this event. The group performed a fabulous cover of Chronix’s “Likes” in a remixed version that captivated the audience at St. Isidore’s Hall in Soufriere.

The SCSS family wishes Berrance and Louisy the very best as they continue to work with these wonderful young performers.

UNICEF has designated November 20 annually as World Children’s Day. This year this date fell on a Sunday. To this end the administration and staff observed the day and celebrated the children of SCSS on Monday November 21. It was truly a day to remember.

Though rain clouds threatened the celebration the mood and energy of the place was buoyant. The staff organized a very interactive and thought provoking suite of presentations to help the students focus well on the theme: Inclusion, for every child.

The assembly comprised a pleasant blend of poetry, motivational speeches, drama and musical performances all of which seemed to leave a deep impression on the students.

Peter Jn Paul of the Anse Chastanet Jade Mountain spoke to the theme with some exhilarating motivational remarks. Stephen Stevaco Joseph charged the students to consider a culture of life unceasingly as opposed to a culture destruction through his spoken word piece. Hadams Louisy and Celia Mitchel both presented with spoken word and monologue respectively. They appealed to issues affecting males and females respectively.

Head of the Political and Economic Division of the Ministry of External Affairs,Nancy Nicholas analyzed the theme eloquently bringing the home the spirit of the same. Gabriel Jude delivered a strong kweyol interpretation of the theme. There were two wonderful musical performances by musicians and vocalists Marcellus Cazaubon and Kurtley “Magic” Auguste.

The assembly concluded with a communal singing of the ever-famous and emotionally charged song: “We are the World”. After the assembly every child received an edible treat and personalized button expressing how precious they are.

Many thanks must be expressed to Denisa Joseph for creating a stunning backdrop for the photobooth on the day. The wax apple tree now stands with ribbons of blue with positive messages from the students.
