Saint Lucia: "Rest In Peace - Daphne Murray," says Ernest Hilaire while paying tribute

Castries, Saint Lucia: Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Lucia- Dr Ernest Hilaire, expressed condolences on the passing of Daphne Murray, who contested elections in 1982 for the Saint Lucia Labour Part for the Castries South Constituency.

While paying tribute to Daphne Murray, Dr Ernest Hilaire expressed, “Rest In Peace – Daphne Murray.”

Hilaire stated that this morning, family and friends held a Celebratory Service for the life of Daphne Murray. She made history when she contested elections in 1982 for the Saint Lucia Labour Party for the Castries South constituency.

He outlined some aspects of her life:

She was the first female candidate for the SLP. She was a former Assistant Secretary and a former Treasurer of the Labour Party during the 1982 to 1987 period. The first female to serve in these positions. It is even more remarkable as this was the rebuilding phase after the collapse of the Labour Party Government in 1981. The Party thereafter underwent a major restructuring and mobilization process.

Dr Ernest Hilaire noted that he usually visited her home and remembered his last visit before the last General Elections. He outlined that she had so much advice to give and shared several memories of her campaign.

He added, “Although I knew of her, I got to know her only recently. My Constituency Group visited her a few times at her home. I remember our last visit before the last General Elections. She had so much advice to give and shared her many memories of her campaign. Most importantly, she was a lovely person who radiated warmth and compassion.”

Further, Dr Ernest Hilaire extended a heartfelt tribute to her with rhyme;

Then raise the scarlet standard high.

Within its shade, we’ll live and die,

Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,

We’ll keep the red flag flying here.

May she Rest in Peace.
