Castries, Saint Lucia: Saint Lucia remained unbeaten when they registered a 63-run victory over Saint Vincent and The Grenadines at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground yesterday (Wednesday, 19th) in the Windward Islands U19 Cricket tournament.
Saint Lucia found it difficult to score and were 9 for 174 at one stage before No.8 Shawnil Edward 40 not out from (50 balls) and No.11 Aaron Joseph 16 not out from (26 balls) featured in an unbroken stand that yielded 66 runs from 54 deliveries.
Earlier in the innings, Noel Leo (18), Jonathan Daniel (30), Bolton Sayers (21), Tarrique Edward (19), and Royce Paul (23) – all had good starts but failed to carry on to big scores.
Saint Lucia’s total was padded with 64 Extras that included (2b, 3lb, 56w, 3nb) Chasing 241 for victory, Saint Vincent and The Grenadines openers, Ian-j Gonsalves (16) and Ethan Gibson (17) had a promising start, but by the half-way stage, five wickets were down for 109 runs.
The batters found runs difficult to come by as the innings folded for 177 in the 45th over. Joe Williams top-scored with 32 from (69 balls), while skipper Luke Wilson chipped in with 21 from (28 balls). Bowling for Saint Lucia, right-arm off-spinner Royce Paul picked up 3 for 25, Shawnil Edward 2 for 25, Aaron Joseph 2 for 33, Kevin Gassie 2 for 41, and Bolton Sayers I for 5.
Final Scores: Saint Lucia Under-19s 240 for 9 in 50 overs; Saint Vincent & The Grenadines 177 all out in 44.1 overs. In the other match played at the Gros Islet playing field, Grenada defeated Dominica by 9 wickets with 42.1 overs remaining. Scores: Dominica Under-19s 48 all out in 18.2 overs; Grenada Under-19s 49 for 1 in 7.5 overs.
Teenage opening batter Namiah Marcellin and all-rounder Nerissa Crafton is among five Saint Lucians in the Windward Islands 14-member squad selected for Cricket West Indies Women’s Regional T20 Blaze and 50-over tournament scheduled for July.
The team will be captained by the experienced West Indies leg- spinner, Afy Fletcher from Grenada. The other three Saint Lucians named in the squad were Malika Edward, Saint Lucia captain in the just concluded Windward Islands 50 over and T20 tournament, Qiana Joseph, and West Indies 2023 World Cup teenage all-rounder, Zaida James.
