Castries, Saint Lucia: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recently presented the Epidemiology Unit within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs of Saint Lucia with six laptops in a small handover ceremony.

Country Program Specialist for PAHO Reynold Hewitt says his organization is pleased to make this contribution to the ministry which will assist in the surveillance of diseases.

“The Pan American Health Organization recognizes the importance of surveillance in the management of diseases and access to current and up-to-date information. We, as a health organization, would like to ensure that countries can process data on diseases for forecasting, trends, and determining the incidence and prevalence of diseases, so we take the opportunity to donate six laptop computers to the Surveillance unit in the Ministry of Health Wellness and Elderly Affairs, to ensure that data is stored and process accurately for decision making.”

National Epidemiologist in the Ministry of Health Dr Michelle Francois expressed gratitude to PAHO for the laptops and the support they continue to provide to Saint Lucia.

“The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs extend its deepest appreciation for the donation of the computers to the Epidemiology Unit. Over the last two years, the demand for timely and accurate information has increased, and the Epidemiology Unit, as the entity responsible for data collection, analysis and reporting within the Ministry of Health, has had to adapt to this increased demand. The donation of these computers will certainly assist in the timely generation of information to guide public health action.”

The Pan American Health Organisation will continue to support the Epidemiology Unit in an effort to help them adequately respond to disasters and disease outbreaks.
